Ferdinand and Isabella , the Catholic kings of Spain , employed adventurers , with the task of finding new sources of gold , to finance Spain ‘s future wars . The New World offered the “opportunity ‘ for expanding Spain ‘s treasury , and thus for strengthening the Spanish army The rulers of Spain were strict followers of the Catholic religion . They forbid the exercise of other religions in their domains . Forced conversion was the rule of the religion . It was this fanaticism that brought Spain into the New World .
