Value of Diversity in the Workplace
Diversity in the workplace is vitally important according to Josh Greenberg, President of AlphaMeasure, Inc (2004)“An organization’s success and competitiveness depends upon its ability to embrace diversity and realize the benefits”(para. 3).
Workplace diversity focuses on the similarities and differences of people working in an organization. These differences bring a benefit to the workplace in terms of skills, abilities, and creativity, allowing a company to compete in today’s diverse marketplace. Diversity today is a broad statement that includes dimensions beyond legally specified non-discrimination affirmative action statutes. Inclusive diversity is more often than not interpreted as including those dimensions that go beyond gender and race to include influences that shape identities and perspectives that affect the workplace. These influences comprised of education, profession, parental status and even geographic location, provide a well rounded and diverse workforce that allows a company to move progressively forward (Cornell University ILR School, 2009).
This paper will presents The Way to Happiness Int. as a company who relies on an inadequate workforce to complete complex legal and technical requirements because of deficiencies in professional and educational diversity. The Way to Happiness Int. is a nonprofit organization in Glendale, California, who teach acceptance and ‘how to live moral lives in today’s world’ by way of self help books. By this token it is assumed that the workforce of The Way to Happiness Int. would be very diverse and even progressive, but unfortunately diversity in terms of education or technical capability, or outside perspectives are rarely seen.
