Unit 504 Develop health and safety risk management policies procedures and practices in health and social care or children and young people's setting.
1. Understand the current legislative framework and organisational health, safety and risk management policies, procedures and practices that are relevant to health, and social care or children and young people's setting.
1.1 Explain the legislative framework for health, safety and risk management in the work setting
Health and Safety at Work, Act 1974 and the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 are pieces of health and safety legislation. These are the standards that must be met to safeguard the health and safety of all employees.
HASAW Act is the umbrella to the regulations that are set.
Regulations are in place to cover all work place activities that pose a risk to the employee, i.e. Manual handling regulations and Control of Substances Hazardous to Health.  
  * COSHH - Control of Substances Hazardous to Health
This regulation is in place to protect the health and safety of the employee when working with hazardous substances. Hazardous substances by law should be labelled accordingly explaining its risks or sometimes labelled with a big black X; this includes all cleaning products, paint etc. All the COSHH products should be locked away, and be kept to a minimum.
Whilst doing this assessment it has come to my attention that there must be a risk assessment in place for all the different products that are being use. This is something I will act upon as soon as possible.
  * PPE – Personal Protection Equipment
It is required by law that the employer provides Personal Protection for all employers and it is law that it is worn by the employee. Therefore due to this being a mandatory requirement it is a requirement that employees where the equipment that is provided.
