Using Action Research in the Oral Communications Classroom Marc Waterfield MATESOL Kumamoto University Oral Communications Buntoku SHS Abstract Action research helped the author identify his students' confidence problem to use English as being related to their unrealistic study goals and performance expectations. Furthermore, it assisted the author greatly in designing a course syllabus that met the curriculum specifications outlined by the Ministry of Education. In this framework, providing specific information and helping to set more realistic study goals increased students’ appreciation of English communicative skills. Action research is presented here as an appropriate framework for teacher-researchers to conduct classroom-based research in the aim of effecting positive change.
