This unit is about the care and support that a teaching assistant provides for individual pupils and groups of pupils. It involves working as directed by the teacher, to provide the appropriate level of support needed by pupils. It includes child development and child protection.

ELEMENT ONE – Social and Emotional Development

Social Development – The child’s identity, their relationship with others, and understanding their place within a social environment. Emotional Development – A childs increasing awareness and control of their feelings and how they react to these feelings in a given situation. Various terms are used to describe social and emotional aspects of learning including personal and social development, emotional literacy, emotional intelligence, and social and emotional competence and social, emotional and behavioural skills. There are five broad social and emotional areas of learning: • • • • • self-awareness managing feelings motivation empathy social skills

These aspects are often considered to fall into two categories – the personal skills (e.g. selfawareness) and the interpersonal skills (e.g. social skills). Social, emotional and behavioural skills are the foundations of almost every aspect of school, home and community life, including effective learning and getting on with other people.
