This subject area offers pupils an insight into how Alton Towers operates as a business. Coupled with the on-Park talk, the pupil worksheets help provide an understanding of the importance of the various different departmental areas at the Park, the recruitment process, the organisational structure of the attraction and the importance of market research and promotion in increasing revenue. The pupil worksheets for this subject also provide exercises for pupils to complete at Alton Towers on the day of their visit.
QUESTION 1
Notes
In addition to drafting a response to a job vacancy posted on the Alton Towers website, pupils could also be encouraged to search the recruitment pages of their local newspaper and repeat the exercise. Prior to drafting their application letter, pupils can be encouraged to list the type of experience and qualities the fulfilment of the role might require and how their own experience at school or (if relevant), their part time job, would make them suitable for the position. To support this activity, pupils can be encouraged to get into pairs and create mock interview scenarios – taking turns in assuming the roles of interviewer and interviewee.
QUESTION 2
Notes
In order to respond to this question, pupils could consider examples of market research they (or their parents) have experienced in the past (e.g. railway station questionnaires) and think about the importance of market research in their given example. Once pupils have responded to Question 2, they can be encouraged to list five areas they think should be covered in an Alton Towers guest questionnaire and for each example they give, volunteer reasons for their suggestions.
QUESTION 4
Notes
Some of the items to consider for this question are: ride photographs, mugs, keyrings and branded stationery (on sale at the various shops and stands throughout the Park).
