Apparel is defined as clothing or dress. It can be from religious aspects, working, social, sexual, aesthetic and functional qualities.
People wear apparel for many different purposes that may be for functional reasons that is performs and satisfies a function or for aesthetic reasons, that is the person chooses to wear the clothing as they find it appealing and/or beautiful.
The styles of apparel have been developed for hundreds and hundreds of years.
Today contemporary design has been inspired from the back channelling of apparel, as hats old becomes new again.
The media extensively penetrates apparel, in the form that it plays an influence on what apparel is in fashion. This is perceived through focus on fashion week, styles of celebrities and TV and movies.

Religious reasons:
Religion plays an important part in apparel, as it focuses on the traditional aspects through time. This is important as it is a sign of devotion to their God or Gods. For example Muslim women wear the veil or the Hijab as it is apart of their religion.
Occupation:
Apparel can be designed to give identity as it provides a status, function and differentiates something. For example, school uniform gives identity and class to a school.
Sporting reasons: Apparel is women to give comfort during physical activity and for safety reasons. Certain colours distinguish and provide a reputation for sporting teams. Eg: green and gold for Australia.
Prestigious designers such as Christian Dior, Marc Jacobs, Valentio, Ralph Lauren, Donna Karen and many more, have influenced the styles of apparel, making it seem prestigious and worthwhile to buy. Today there are many shape and styles of apparel to suit men and women’s shapes, styles and size.
