Assess the extent to which China is a threat to the USA status as the only current superpower? (15 marks) - Jan 2012
A superpower can be defined as a country that has the capacity to project dominating power and influence anywhere in the world, and sometimes, in more than one region of the globe at a time, and so may plausibly attain the status of global hegemony. The USA has been the world’s leading superpower for almost a century. In terms of the economic strength or cultural power, no other country has been able to defy America of their superpower status. Conversely, China has experienced rapid economic and social development in recent years. With GDP growth averaging about 10 percent per year this indicates that by 2020, it could exceed that of the USA. Although this is a vital factor in the decimation of the USA as the world’s only current superpower, there are many other factors to which play a key role in the supposed domination of China.
Para 1- for (China growing influence- eg China investing into Africa)
