Description of actions relating to the
Certificate in Assessing Vocational Achievement
(CAVA)
I currently work for Training Group, which is a work based learning/training provider based in Teesside. Part of my job role consists of delivering the Staff Development programme. This helps staff maintain their competence levels and keeps their skills up to date. I currently hold a D32/33 assessor qualification and have attended an A1 upgrade session when the standards changed but since the qualification standards have changed again I have decided to complete a portfolio of evidence to meet the new CAVA standards. The portfolio contains descriptions of my activities and of the evidence collected which meets units 1, 2, and 3. The two learners, Louise and Jim were undertaking L3 Diploma in Business and Administration and L3 Certificate in Management respectively. Awarding Organisations regulations states that assessors must be occupationally competent or hold the qualification to be assessed As my previous job role was that of a production supervisor and I possess a management qualification I felt able to assess the management qualification and the business and administration with little problem. I have also assessed the L3 Management through Edxecel while on secondment with NAC.
Part of my assessor responsibilities was to ensure that Louise and Jim understood how they were going to be assessed and what type s of evidence they would need to collect, therefore I carried out an induction with both learners where we chose the most suitable optional units and discussed how they would be met. Once they were registered I met with Jim and Louise again and I gave them a portfolio in which to build up their evidence and explained how to complete the documentation. We then started to plan the assessments.
