Explain the function of assessment in learning and development
Assessment is carried out to ensure that learning has taken place. It measures the learner’s knowledge and skills in their learning area. There are three main types of assessment - Initial Assessment, Formative Assessment and Summative Assessment.
Initial assessment is about knowing your learners, in order to be able give them appropriate support, and it is a crucial part of the learning journey. From my perspective, as a tutor, it enables effective planning to meet each learner’s individual needs and establishes an initial reference point from which the learners’ progress and achievement can be reviewed. From the learner’s perspective it should establish a starting point, so that the learner can see how much they have achieved during the course. For these reasons I carry the initial assessment process early on, as I find it effectively sets the scene for a successful and productive relationship.
A well-planned initial assessment process for a learner will explore many aspects including progression destinations and agreeing the most appropriate one for them, identify prior learning achievements and attainments, exploring vocational preferences and aspirations, identifying their personal and social development skills and needs, identifying the levels that they are currently working at in English and mathematics, identifying their preferred learning styles, identifying any additional support needs including any learning difficulties and/or disabilities, health or personal circumstances where the learner might require support and identifying any potential barriers to learning.
After discussing and determining the above, I would record the results of their initial assessment in their Individual Learning Plan (ILP), together with the results of their diagnostic assessment, health and/or personal circumstances and any additional support needed.
