Question 1.
Describe how you might contribute to a lesson given to a group of seven year old children learning to play percussion instruments.
The role of the teaching assistant is to contribute to the lesson by supporting the teacher and providing a positive and effective classroom environment whilst helping to minimise unacceptable behaviour. My contribution to the lesson would be in the following ways.
* I would make sure I had good knowledge of the instruments prior to the start of the lesson. i.e. names of the instruments and how to use them all.
* Dedicating a safe and suitable area for the instruments to be set up ready for use before the pupils come in to the lesson and making sure they are all clean and in good working order.
* To minimise behaviour problems and to be a good role model, I would show the pupils how to use the instruments correctly to avoid frustration.
* Observe the class or group to identify any pupils struggling with using them and help them correct their method.
* Provide the pupils with music books/sheets if needed and have spare copies.
* As the lesson approaches the end I would ask the pupils as quickly as possible to avoid disruption or boredom, if they needed to ask or know anything about what we had learnt and hand back all instruments and music books/sheets.
Question 2.
What might your role be in organising, using and maintaining the learning resources, material and equipment for this percussion lesson?
I would assist in preparing the instruments before the lesson begins, ensuring all the instruments are in good clean working order. As instructed by the teacher I would ensure all equipment and materials are set up correctly in the correct place, checking there are enough for the whole class or groups. Once the lesson is finished I would encourage the pupils to return all instruments and materials to be stored...
