Assessment Task One
The parents of Anjum a little girl who is new to your setting moved to England only 3 months ago. Yours is the first setting that they have used for 18 month old Anjum. They have very little understanding of the legislation covering home based childcare or the role of the regulatory body.
* Consider 4 pieces of legislation that are important for home based childcarers and how you would outline these to Anjum’s parents?
* How would you go about outlining the 4 different roles of the regulatory body to Anjum’s parents?
The most important part of being a homebased childcarer is the wellbeing of the children that I care for. I aim to have a professional but honest relationship with the parents/guardians to enable us to communicate effectively for the benefit of the child.
I would firstly try to ascertain if Anjum’s parents could speak or understand English, if there was no language barrier I would discuss the legislations below and also explain the role of the regulatory body Ofsted which I have to adhere to in every aspect along with this I would provide written information of what we had discussed. If I was to find that Anjum’s parents could speak very little English I would see if they would like to bring a family member/Friend along to translate for them however if this was not an option I would try to translate my written information using tools found on the internet to provide some information for them to takeaway and read.
The four pieces of legislation that I would bring to the attention of Anjum’s parents are as follows:
• The Children Act (2004), explaining every child matters and identify the five outcomes for children –
1.Be healthy
2.Stay safe
3.Enjoy and achieve
4.Make a positive contribution
5.Achieve economic well-being
I feel that these outcomes outline a child minder’s work ethic and it would help Anjum’s parents to understand that these are my priorities for every child within my care.
