Overall, my session – “Introduction to Coffee Tasting” – was a great success. Based on the peer and the assessor feedback it was thought to be creative, innovative and interesting. Right at the beginning, I covered the Health & Safety aspect of the session by making the learners aware of hot liquids, so that nobody burns themselves. I also ensured that nobody was allergic to nuts which we were meant to taste later during the session to be certain that individual needs of my learners were met. I also made sure the learners felt comfortable and that the learning environment was a safe one, by ensuring the group they should not be worried, if they get some answers wrong, as we are all here to learn. The group found the topic to be interesting and fun. Based on the feedback, the introduction to the lesson came through as a strength. My lesson plan and objectives were clear and smart which enable me to identify whether the learners have achieved the set objectives or not. Also, during the session, I directed my questions at the whole group, as well as the individual learners. Nominating individual learners to answer questions, by using their names, ensures inclusivity and improves engagement which I wanted to achieve. It also ensures that everyone participates equally, even the quieter and shy learners. Everyone felt they learn something new by the end of the session. I made an analogy by linking the coffee tasting to the wine tasting, which could help some learners build on their prior knowledge. All of this ensured the learners found the topic relevant. I maintained clear communication and displayed a strong subject knowledge. By using good probing questions during the lesson, I made certain that the learners understood the content well, while constant Q&A and praise kept everyone engaged.
