The author works in a school for young people who have complex needs including communication difficulties and behaviour that challenges arising from Autism Spectrum Disorders. The abilities of the young people are very varied and the ages range from 8-19 years old. The school is residential and aims to support, educate and care for their learners. The school’s ethos is to enable young people with complex needs to reach their full potential.
This paper will be looking at some of the factors that can impact upon learning and achievement and will be analysing them with regards to an inclusive approach. This paper will also look at how minimum core elements can be applied within theories and principles for planning and enabling inclusive learning and teaching.
“Everyone is a potential learner and there is an enormous diversity of learners out there with all sorts of needs, abilities and experiences” Scales (2008) (p272).
Inclusive learning is about being person centred, this is a very important phrase to the author with regards to her employment in a school where every young person has a statement and individual complex needs.
“… An inclusive learning environment means that all learners have equal access to learning opportunities”. Gravells and Simpson (2011)
Inclusive learning is sometimes misunderstood as treating everybody the same, however it is very important that this is not the case as all learners have very different needs. As learnt from experience if you teach learners all in the same way, many in the class would not achieve. Hence the above quote is very important to bear in mind.
