Diversity is recognizing and understanding that two individuals are never the same no matter how similar they may be. That there is a wide variety of factors that makes that individual unique, These differences may range from physical factors such as race, disability and gender, to having different personal characteristics such as beliefs, sexual orientation, age and lifestyles.
Equality is ensuring each individual is treated the same and offered equal opportunities that fit their own personal needs, no matter what their age, gender, race, religion, disability or sexual orientation.
Inclusion is the opposite of discrimination, meaning each individuals is to be included and has input in their person centered plan, decision making, and in any daily activities at all times giving them the same equal opportunities as everyone else, no matter their age, race, gender, disability and sexual orientation.
Discrimination is excluding individuals and treating them unfairly, not giving them the same respect as others, due to their age, gender, race, disability, religion or sexual orientation.
If someone is being discriminated against it could have serious effects that could include emotional and physical harm. These may include: Low self esteem/ worth, depression, feeling vulnerable, stressed, scared, angry, excluded/ rejected by the world and self harm / suicide. The staff worker could also be dismissed from the company and damage the companys reputation.
Inclusive practice is important in promoting and supporting equality and diversity as it is bringing a wide variety of individuals together, treating them equally and offering them all the same opportunities but working with them in ways that surround their own personal needs.This will make them feel more respected, accepted and valued as a person, possibly giving them more fulfilment in life.
