what is the main purpose of Churchill’s speech? (What is it he hopes will be accomplished as a result of his words?)
Churchill’s speech was about the countries coming together for the better of man kind. He was hoping that the people would understand that he believed that the Soviet Russia didn’t desire war, but “what they desire is the fruits of war and the indefinite expansion of their power and doctrines.” What he was saying simply is if we all work together maybe we could avoid conflict, and that if everyone would of listened to him before all this happened; Hitler wouldn’t of come to such power. He is hopes were mainly peace.
How does the example of development of World War II apply to the current crisis in Churchill’s opinion?
Churchill’s opinion on the oncoming WWII was that he saw it coming and “cried aloud to my own fellow countrymen and to the world, but no paid any attention.” He also says, “There never was a war in history easier to prevent by timely action than the one which has just desolated such great areas of the globe. It could have been prevented, in my belief, without the firing of a single shot, and Germany might be powerful, prosperous and honored today; but no one would listen and one by one we were all sucked into the awful whirlpool.” Churchill knew that if anyone didn’t listen or act now that we would end up going into another world war. He also knew that if he could reach the people now and get them to come together as one it could be prevented.
Does he believe war with the Soviet Union can be avoided? If so, what must be done?
Yes, Churchill knew that war with The Soviet Union could be prevented if all the allied powers worked together. He knew that the United States and Great Britain were going to be in danger if they simply closed their eyes to them or as like to say it act like it never happens. Also Churchill stated that the dangers will not be removed by waiting to see what comes up next, or by a policy of appeasement....
