a) Safeguarding is a term that’s been used more prominently following the tragic death of Victoria Climbe, and the investigation that followed. This investigation was published as the Laming Report.
Working together to Safe guard Children (Department of Health, 2005) says:
“Safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children is defined as:
* Protecting children from maltreatment.
* Preventing impairment of children’s health and development, and
* Ensuring that children are growing up in circumstances consistent with the provision of safe and effective care;
And undertaking that role so as to enable those children to have optimum life chances and enter adulthood successfully”
b) Working together to safeguard children says that child protection is a subset of safeguarding and promoting welfare. In other words, child protection is an activity that is undertaken to protect specific who are suffering or at risk of suffering significant harm.
c) The document “What to do if you’re worried a child is being abused” which was updated in 2006 is a very useful document produced following the
Victoria Climbe enquiry and the aim is to support professionals complying with government guidance on safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children, the Framework for Assessment of Children in Need and their Families (2000) and Working Together to Safeguard Children (2006).
