1. CLIL: THE APPROACH FOR THE FUTURE
INTRODUCTION
This essay will discuss the advantages and disadvantages of the implementation of CLIL, and it will also try to find an answer to this question: Is Clil the approach for the future? It is important to consider all the positive effects and negative effects of CLIL to decide if it is the appropriate methodology that will result in the simultaneous learning of content and English (L2). Throughout this essay there will be a few references to the current Spanish situation of different aspects of CLIL, and it will also have a look at the requirements for a CLIL program to be implemented successfully.
2. ADVANTAGES OF CLIL
The psychological, cognitive, cultural and economic benefits of adopting a CLIL approach – language and non-language content - are considerable.
Language is used to fulfill a real purpose: to learn a meaningful content, not a disposable one, taking a holistic approach. It focuses on meaning, fluency and communication, and grammar is embedded. Meaningful learning increases the learner’s motivation and self-confidence. Equally important is the fact that it takes into account the learners’ interests, needs and cognitive levels.
