1.1 Why effective communication is important in developing positive relationships with children, young people and adults.

Effective communication is important in developing positive relationships with children, young people and adults as it increases the likelihood of developing and maintaining a positive relation. Adults within and outside of the school tend to provide positive support if communication is strong. This can and usually does have a   significant benefit to the pupils.

It is paramount that we model effective communication, by means of how we conduct ourselves through times of stress and excitement, thus enabling pupils to understand what is expected of them, others and what they can expect from the school. By behaving in this way it makes it easier for pupils to understand and follow expectations and boundaries.

It is imperative that we accept and understand that communication breakdowns occur through misunderstanding and can result in the disintegration of a positive relationship.


1.2 The principles of relationship building with children, young people and adults.

Effective communication usually stems from a warm and friendly approach, which ultimately encourages open and honest communication.

Positive communication must be earned and maintained through:

• Showing respect .
• Being clear on key points.
• Taking time to listen to others.
• Effective communication.
• Being   consideration.
• Having a sense of humour.
• Being considerate.
• Effective communication.
• Remembering issues which are personal to them.
• Etc.


1.3 Different social, professional and cultural contexts may affect relationships and the way people communicate.

It is important to modify the way in which information is conveyed in a variety of situations, such as, using more formal language and behaviour in a meeting, through the medium of discussions and presentations.
