Communication in Family
Sati (1988) said that a nurturing family is a “place where people find love, understanding and support even when all else fails and where we can be refreshed and recharged to cope more effectively with the world outside” (p. 12). Communication is an important element to achieve a nurturing family. After watching the movie “My Sister’s Keeper”, I realized the significance of communication to a family since everyone in the family suffered without true communication even they loved each other. Stimulated by this movie, I would like to discuss the problems of communication and suggest ways to attain effective communication in family.
“My Sister’s Keeper” is a movie talks about an eleven years old girl called Anna who was engineered to donate her body parts to save her leukemia-stricken sister, Kate’s life. However, eventually she did not want to do that anymore and demanded to get back the right to control her own body. She hired a lawyer and sued her parent to demand medical independence and rejected to donate her kidney to her sister even that would make her sister die. Her mother, Sara, who was a responsible and determined mother, could not give up her daughter, Kate’s life even it required her little daughter, Anna, to sacrifice more. The war between the two main characters nearly tore the family apart. However, the truth was exposed at the end. Kate wanted to end her painful life and asked Anna to pretend not wanting to be the spare body parts of her sister anymore because she was as important as her sister. All these things could be avoided if Sara did listen to what Kate wanted but she didn’t. Kate not just mentioned once that she wanted to die but Sara didn’t pay attention to her will because she loved Kate so much and didn’t want to let her go. She wanted to keep Kate alive just because she wanted to but not Kate wanted to. This made the whole family suffered including the one she wanted to and thought she was saving, and that...
