What is Public Health?
Did you know that public health is more than just medical care? One level of public health is to provide medical care within the community and outside the hospital. Another level of public health can have global repercussions and refers to efforts to prevent epidemics and improve the health of entire nations. In whole “public health promotes and protects the health of people and the communities where they live learn work and play” (APHA, 2016, pg. 1). Public health works are not doctors that treat a patient that is sick. Public health workers try to prevent us from getting sick or sicker; they also try to prevent injury as well as promoting wellness by encouraging healthy lifestyles and or behaviors. Public health workers conduct scientific research to educate us about health and assure we have healthy living conditions. “Public health works track disease outbreaks, prevent injuries and shed light on why some of us are more likely to suffer from poor health than others” (APHA, 2016, pg. 1).
History of Public Health
Public health began in ancient times, emphasizes how various public health concepts have evolved. Historical public health measures included quarantine of leprosy victims in the Middle Ages and efforts to improve sanitation following the 14th-century plague epidemics. Population increases in Europe brought with them increased awareness of infant deaths and a proliferation of hospitals. These developments in turn led to the establishment of modern public health agencies and organizations, designed to control disease within communities and to oversee the availability and distribution of medicines.

With public health being such a broad field, I will shed light on the ten most common fields within public health.
