means of free associatio n w ith a v iew to let the author w ithdraw fro m the novel and the reader m eet
the characters face to face. T he autho r's consciousness chang es from objective time to subjective time
in a three dimensio nal structure of the spatial and temporal discord. This helps to tap the characters'
inner w orld and put the autho r's subjectiv e initiativ e to full use. James Jo yce's Uly sses adroitly employs
the stream of conscio usness technique to a fit that it beco mes a epoch making milesto ne o f literatur e.
