Continuity and Change

Continuity and Change

a) Briefly outline one theory of social change you have studied.

Interactionism
The Interactionism theory is an appropriate theory of social change as supporters of this theory believe that an individual develops an understanding of self by interacting with others in their community and that it is through the interaction between individuals that a social structure is formed. This theory continues to suggest that, because these individuals share a common bond or feel an attachment to their society, social change will only occur when they believe that change is necessary and alter their interaction with each other in order to bring about this change.
According to this theory, any new idea, which is introduced to a society, will meet opposition because it is seen as being outside the constraints (or limits) or that society. However, persistence in attempting to introduce the new idea may meet with success because the individuals who make up that society are capable of altering their interaction with each other to allow change to occur.
The Interactionism theory can also be used to explain why such change is not always complete because old attitudinal beliefs are the hardest to change – and so many people cling to their traditional beliefs.
Therefore it would be appropriate to use the theory to explain changes in traditional life of religious belief, gender roles and the changing traditions and values.

b) Use the interactionism theory to explain continuity and/or change in gender roles and the status of women and men

Gender Roles and the Status of Women and Men
The basis of society in P-NG before colonisation was the tribe, which is made up of many clans. Each clan lives in a village quite close to one another. A clan is made up of several families who are related to each other in some way.
Within the village, there were strict traditional role governed by gender. The women would look after the children, cook the meals, care for...
