4.1 Cookridge Carpets Limited is a large carpet, soft furnishings and bed dealership situated in Southampton. It is a private limited company, set up in 2007 by Peter and John Cookridge. The directors bought a plot of land and developed an aircraft hangar sized building to use as the showroom. The company employs 20 members of staff including three part time staff working within the small accounts department. Cookridge Carpets Ltd has grown and developed since it set up and has recently started selling carpets and beds over the internet. It has recently employed a fourth member of the accounts team; a senior accounts clerk with the main role of supervising the running of the accounts department and managing the staff within it.
4.1.1 The mission statement of the company states that the aims of the company are to provide excellent customer service to all customers regardless of the amount spent and to sell goods that can make a house a home.
4.2 An organisation chart showing the organisation structure of the company is included within Appendix 1 of this report.
4.2.1 There are four stand alone computers used by the accounts staff; one for each member of the team. The inventory information is maintained on Microsoft Office Excel spreadsheets. The payroll system is run on Sage Payroll software which enables the payroll to be run in-house. The same password is used to protect the information on the system and is used for everything throughout the company. The existing accounting system has been used within the organisation since the company began in 2007.
4.3 For the first eighteen months, the payroll system was managed by the company’s accountants, Southampton Accounting Services.
