Technology used in policing has helped the way police organizations’ operates daily. Some of the technologies used are global positioning system device, on-board computer terminals, diagramming and mapping system, motion sensitive and thermal imaging camera, and photo enforcement systems. These technologies help law enforcement perform their jobs more efficiently and effectively than in the past.
The global positioning system device (known as GPS) lets the dispatch keep track of police vehicles. It gives information on where vehicles are located so the dispatcher knows with officer is closer to the emergency scene. It gives report of the estimated time of the police arrival to the scene. For example, the ability of an agency to receive alerts when registered sex offenders are not at home, work, or treatment during designated times helps keep them accountable; being able to trace exactly where they have been over the past month provides information enforceable (Kurt Smith, April 2009). On-board computer terminals with wireless capability give officers access to information, database files and mapping systems. Law enforcement use the police car computer to run citizens license information and perform background checks to issue a ticket quickly or approach a suspect safely. Diagramming and mapping system show the ability to depict where a crime has occurred and can predict the locations of future crimes. This system quickly lets police officer know how things happen by illustrating the crime scenes that occurred. Motion-sensitive cameras enable law enforcement officers to instantly observe criminals in action and covertly monitor nearly any location for crimes. Thermal-imaging cameras can detect heat from marijuana-growing operations. They also can be used to locate suspects hiding in wooded areas or under things.
