The parents of Anjum a little girl who is new to your setting moved to England only 3 months ago. Yours is the first setting that they have used for 18 month old Anjum. They have very little understanding of the legislation covering home based childcare or the role of the regulatory body.

1. 4 pieces of legislation important for home based childcarers
There are many pieces of legislation in the UK relating to children that are both relevant and important to anyone involved in looking after and educating children and young people. If I had to choose 4 that are important for home based childcarers I would choose the following:
Children Act (2004)
Childcare Act (2006)
Equality Act (2010)
Data Protection Act (1998)
I would have these Acts listed in my portfolio that would be available for all parents to look at. Under each Act I would give a simple description of what the law entails and give examples of how I would follow that law within my setting. There would also be a discussion with Anjum’s parents too, which they may find easier than trawling through lots of written information in their second language. I would try to explain the Acts simply to all parents, giving them the key information they need. I would also demonstrate how I would put the above legislation into practice, e.g. keeping children safe, when I interact with Anjum and other children in my house and when I show her parents around the house.
