Death Penalty

Due Wed., Dec. 9:   Is the death penalty equitable?

Yes, the death penalty is equitable.

1. I think that depends on the verdict. I well remember the case of Timothy Evans hanged for killing his baby daughter when in fact it was later discovered the John Christie was the killer. Cases like this are rare but unjust However, in my opinion cases where the culprit is guilty beyond all shadow of doubt then it is justifiable.

2. I believe there are some murders that are so brutal and heinous that the death penalty is the only appropriate penalty

No, the death penalty is not equitable.

1.   The death penalty is a strong punishment, and cruel if sentenced to an innocent person. Many people receive faulty legal representation, a death sentence, and eventual exoneration through post conviction evidence.

2. The American Civil Liberties Union believes the death penalty inherently violates the constitutional ban against cruel and unusual punishment and the guarantees of due process of law and of equal protection under the law. Furthermore, we hold that the state should not arrogate unto itself the right to kill human beings – especially when it kills with premeditation and ceremony, in the name of the law or in the name of its people, or when it does so in an arbitrary and discriminatory fashion.
