Discovery essay: ‘Away’ and ‘The Perks of being a wallflower’
Thesis – Individuals find that they discover the most when they trust in curiosity.
Discovery can be reconstructed by a character or lifestyle determined by interest. Individuals find that they discover the most when they trust in curiosity. Family and friends impact on personal discovery and can make an individual require different things. In the family drama Away by Michael Gow, Tom’s discovery is impacted on by his illness, family and his want for a normal life, in comparison to ‘The perks of being a wallflower’ by Stephen Chbosky, Character Charlie whose discovery is impacted on by a mental Illness and his wants for a social interaction with his peers. Everybody experiences discovery and It effects people in many different ways, big or small.
Tom is the main character of ‘Away’. He is 17 years old and son of Vic and Harry. Tom has been ill and received a diagnosis of Leukemia. Tom wants to live the most of his life because he knows that his sickness could be fatal at any given time. The stimulant for Tom is his illness which causes him to want a normal life. His intention is to forget about his fatal illness and concentrate on his family. His illness makes him curious, for example the author portrays Tom’s feelings of a need to be normal when he pleads with Meg in ‘Act four, scene two’, to “Please, please” let him “do it to” Meg. Tom’s intention is to forget about his fatal illness and concentrate on his family. Displayed in the proposition, ‘trust in curiosity’, in Gow’s play Tom trusted in his natural curiosity in the opposite sex. Much like Charlie trusted in his curiosity for a social interaction, In Chbosky’s film ‘The perks of being a wallflower’.
