CHAPTER ONE
  INTRODUCTION
1.1 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
For sometime, there has been a lot of controversy on the falling standard of academic performance in Nigeria schools.

The school seems to be held wholly responsible because, it is a place to impact academic learning. On the other hand, the school sees the home as the place where academic performance emanates.

While there has been a general falling or depression in standard of education and the rate at which student fail examinations at the secondary school level in Nigeria. It has been equally observed that there is a wide discrepancy in the academic achievement. Even though the students were tonight by the same teachers in the same environment.

This implies that, different students come from different homes and performs differently in academic work. This is probably because of individual differences such as family background of the parents, environmental influences, genetic background and financial problem against which ability develops.

Therefore, it is generally assumed that children from well educated families are more encourage in learning than children from homes where their parents are not educated or are educated or are half.

1.2 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
The investigator has focused on the study of the effects of
Parental background on child educational development in the secondary schools mostly on English language, this include:
I. Parental attitude on their children
II. Medium of communication in the home.
III. Issue of the dialect.

1.3 PORPOSE OF THE STUDY
The investigation is to find out the effects of parental background on child’s educational development in some selected schools in Agege local government Area of Lagos State. It will find out whether student from educated homes achieve better than those whose parent are not educated.
