We are now living in the Information Age often referred to as the Computer or Digital Age where technological advances are shaping the way we live our lives. One of these technological advances has been in Speech Recognition Software.
What is Speech Recognition?
Speech Recognition Software gives the ability of a computer or computer program to identify words or phrases which are spoken by humans and then converted to a machine-readable format.
History of Speech Recognition
The idea of allowing humans to be able to communicate and to be understood by computers through voice has been floating about since the 1930’s. It was not until the 1970’s – some 40 years later that the idea became possible thanks to the U.S. Department of Defence.
Between 1971 and 1976 the US Department of Defence (DoD) Speech program known as Speech Understanding Research (SUR) Program developed Carnegie Mellon's "Harpy" speech-understanding system. Harpy was the first of its kind and could understand 1011.
Speech Recognition Today
Speech Recognition is now an integrated part of our lives and we probably take it for granted. We only have to make a call to our bank or utility company and we have an automated voice answering instead of a person and giving instructions asking you to press buttons to move through option menus. The advancement of Speech Recognition have allowed these companies to moved beyond requiring you to press buttons, asking you can just speak certain words (again, as instructed by a recording) to get what you need.
What the future holds?
Technology is being developed faster each year, with new technologies being developed and existing ones being updated to run faster and smarter. We only have to look back over the last 20 years to see where Speech Recognition Software has come from to know that anything is possible.
