Community Places is a residential based home in Great Houghton, Barnsley. We support adults between the ages of 18-65, who have been diagnosed with Learning Disabilities, Autism Spectrum Disorders, and enduring Mental Health difficulties. We are a community based residential home, offering residential, respite and more recently day care services. Our aim is to create an environment which meets the individuals needs, with high quality intensive staffing ratio’s, which ensures support is undertaken in a non- institutional way, and which positively encourages development in a multidisciplinary person centred way.
I have been with the company since October 2014, I started within the company as Day Centre Manager to develop and promote the Day Services. I applied for a secondment role as Unit Manager and more recently was offered the position of Unit Manager working towards gaining the Registered Managers award. Within my role as Unit Manager, I am responsible for developing the staff team, managing staff, carrying out assessments, supervisions and appraisals, developing the business, health and safety of the building, ensuring that policies and procedures are in place and up to date, reporting safeguarding and informing CQC of any referrals made.
2. The Situation and Why Change or Improvement is Needed
We currently have 75 staff supporting 32 service users within Community Places at Great Houghton and also at 2 satellite bungalows within the Barnsley area. The owner has recently purchased another home in the Doncaster area and is looking to expand further in the future. We do not have anyone currently in the post over seeing HR on a full-time basis. We have 1 full-time and 2 part-time members of staff dealing with all general administration, wages, resident monies, funding requests and staff recruitment.
