SUBJECT ASSIGNMENT:
ENGLISH IN THE COMMUNITY
GENERAL INFORMATION:
This assignment must be done in groups of two and has to fulfil the following conditions:
- Length: between 4 and 6 pages (without including cover, index or appendices –if there are any-).
- Type of font: Arial or Times New Roman.
- Size: 11.
- Line height: 1.5.
- Alignment: Justified.
The assignment has to be done in this Word document and has to fulfil the rules of presentation and edition, as for quotes and bibliographical references which are detailed in the Study Guide.
Also, it has to be submitted following the procedure specified in the Study Guide. Sending it to the teacher’s e-mail is not permitted.
In addition to this, it is very important to read the assessment criteria, which can be found in the Study Guide.

Answer either Question 1 or Question 2.
1. In essay form, discuss the following quotation from Graddol’s book.
“English seems to have joined this list of basic skills. Quite simply, its function and place in the curriculum is no longer that of ‘foreign language’ and this is bringing about profound changes in who is learning English, their motives for learning it and their needs as learners.” (Graddol, D, page 72)
2. Choose three significant issues from Graddol’s book that interest you, or which caught your attention, and then discuss them in an essay. Try to include/do the following:
a) Write your own title for the essay.
b) Mention the three issues explicitly in your introduction.
c) Try to find links between the issues. Don’t write three separate mini-essays.
d) Explain why Graddol is saying, but also express your opinions on these issues and try to clarify why you chose them.
