In the shoe –horn sonata, Misto uses the medium of theatre to portray the distinctively visual of the brutality of war. Musicality is used in the play as an ironic sound of ‘when our smiling’ is played right after Prime Minister Curtin sends a message to Prisoner of War to “keep smiling”. This juxtaposes with the sounds of ‘machine gun fires’ and the ‘cries of women and children’, serving to heighten the audience’s engagement with the play. This is further amplified with Misto’s direction of the projected images of women and children, who are “stick thin dressed in rag, as they stare at the camera with despairing eyes”.   Misto utilises these dramatic techniques to create a foreboding atmosphere which is enhanced by the disturbing sounds as it creates a poignant visual of the injustice the Japanese’s solider took part in, while creating a vivid image in the viewer’s mind.   In the shoe –horn sonata, Misto uses the medium of theatre to portray the distinctively visual of the brutality of war.
