Diversity is defined as the acceptance and respect of those who are different from you.
It means understanding that each individual is unique, and recognizing our individual differences. In order to be diverse you should take all the following into account: race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, socio-economic status, age, physical abilities, religious beliefs, political beliefs, or other ideologies. Diverity allows or the exploration of the differences amongst each othe in a positive and safe environment. Diversity is valued because I believe that it shows the best side of humanity..
2. What is ethnocentrism? In what ways can ethnocentrism be detrimental to a society?
Ethnocentrism is the belief in the inherent superiority of ones own ethnic group or culture.
Ethnocentric views of the world lead to pride and vanity. This type of vanity and self pride can result in the harboring of feelngs of contempt and hatred for those who are not of the same ethnicity and whom do not share the same beliefs. This leads to discrimination which is a very hard belief to break once it has been instilled or learned.
3. Define emigration and immigration.
To emigrate means to leave one country or region to settle in another.
Immigrating means to come to a country from which one is not a native and establish permanent residence. Immigrating would be from the view point of the country or nation that you settled in. Emigrating would be from the viewpoint of the country or nation tht you left from. All of our ancestors immigrated from another country to the United States at some point.
