The Pillowman is a dark story talking about the spirit of art, and it contains lots of serious and critical meanings in it, but its ways to present the ideas are too “heavy taste”, like the plots of torturing children to death, not everyone can easily understand all of the ideas because of these bloody horror plots. If one wants to present some serious or very meaningful ideas and wants the receiver to receive the ideas in an easier way, black comedy is a very suitable method to apply. Black comedy designate as a sub-genre of comedy which laughter arises from cynicism and skepticism, often talks about topics like death. Film The Suicide Shop is a black comedy film, using the story of a cheering boy from the family that own the suicide shop, to bring out lots of massage about life and death, and some of the themes are similar to The Pillowman. In this essay, two literary art piece including story The Pillowman and film The Suicide Shop will be compared. Comparing both art pieces, there are mainly three similar themes, which are child maltreatment courses tragedies, the elevation of artist’s defense and preservation under the pressure of suppressive system, and everyone’s life involves suffering respectively.
In Martin McDonagh’s The Pillowman and Jean Teulé’s The Suicide Shop, both the stories are constructed by the tragedies courses by the negative effects of child maltreatment.
