Introduction:
Health Promotion is defined as “the process of enabling people to increase control over, and to improve their health” (Hubley and Copeman, 2013). There are five models of health promotion these are the medical model, education model, empowerment model and the social model. These models will be explored in order to evaluate their effectiveness and to see how they relate to obesity.
The current health trend that will be explored will be obesity. Obesity is defined as the abnormal accumulation of body fat. A person is classed as obese if they have twenty or more percent, more body fat than is required for their ideal weight (The Free Dictionary, 2016). Obesity is a health issue in Wales because Wales is considered to have the highest number of children who are overweight or obese (Welsh Assembly Government, 2013).

According to the Welsh Assembly Government, 2013 Wales has the highest number of children that are obese or overweight in the Uk. In Wales thirty five percent of children under the age of sixteen are classed as overweight or obese (Welsh Assembly Government, 2013). The rates that are being seen in Wales are showing that there are more boys in Wales that are overweight compared to the girls with 23 percent of boys being classed as obese compared to 16 percent of girls (Welsh Assembly Government, 2013). This is supported by NHS Wales (2013) they suggest that 31% of the children within Cardiff and the vale are overweight or obese. These figures are compared to the 25% of boys and 23% of girls aged between two and nineteen years old that are classed as overweight or obese in the Uk. It is also suggested that 23% of boys and 16% of girls under the age of sixteen in Wales are overweight or obese (Welsh Assembly Government, 2013).
