This essay will explore how I would promote inclusion, equality and diversity with my future adults mild learning and physical disabilities learners within the main stream college in a class undertaking level 2 course in health and social care . It will also identify other points of referral available to meet the potential needs of the learners.
The Equality Act 2010 recognises disability as one of the protected characteristics, which highlights the rights of the learners to attend and participate in their chosen learning experience. It added that any discrimination or inequality should be challenge. Gravells (2008:18) describes diversity as ‘valuing and respecting the difference in learners regardless of their disabilities, gender, race, age or any other individual characteristics they may have’. The author also explains inclusion as ‘involving all learners in relevant activities, rather than excluding them directly or indirectly’-for any reason
The Disability Discrimination Act 2005 states that you are disabled if you have a mental or physical impairment. This must have an adverse effect on a person’s normal day to day activities in at least one of these areas, mobility, manual dexterity, physical co-ordination, continence etc. As a result, the Act recommended that all learners in these categories must be given the necessary adaption needed to allow them to fully participate in their learning. Whilst the Special Needs and the Disability Act (SENDA) (2001) included education, amended the DDA and now included in the Equality Act 2010.
