Explain key aspects of relevant current legislative requirements and codes of practise within specific context - www.hse.gov.uk – www.ipaf.org
I teach a range of courses that all contain information regarding Health and Safety legislation and Codes of Practice. I explain on the course the difference between a Health and Safety Act or legislation and a Code of Practice by offering the following explanation
• Health and Safety Legislative requirement: A duty to act according to the law as defined in an Act of Parliament and usually enforced by or through the courts.
• Code of Practice: A set of rules outlining how a person in a particular profession or situation is expected to behave.
• Statutory code of practice: A Code of Practice approved by Parliament and admissible as evidence in any legal action
There are several health and safety codes of practice and statutory instruments (additions to Acts of Parliament), which may impact on your teaching role. Some examples are:
Legislative requirements that can be used
• Manual handling. Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992.
• Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999
• Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (PUWER)
• Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998 (LOLER)
• Control of substances hazardous to health (5th edition): the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 2002.
• Work with display screen equipment: Health and Safety (Display Screen Equipment) Regulations 1992 as amended by the Health and Safety (Miscellaneous Amendments) Regulations 2002.

• BS EN 280:2001 Mobile elevating work platforms : Safety by design
• BS 8460 Mobile Elevating Work Platforms : Code of practice : Safe use
• BS EN 1495:1998 Mast climbing work platforms : Safety by design
