1 - A Psychodynamic Perspective –
Early determinance of behavior
The first 3 years of life are critical.
The fundamentals of personality development are determined.
Traced back to Freud.
No real happy endings
The past continues to effect the present.
It’s not just that behavior patterns were established in early life but that you continue to act out those patterns.
This looks at the non-observable
Unconscious thought, behavior, etc.
Behavioral Therapy looks at symptoms and tries to fix them – this looks at what is enormusely complex, I’m not sure it’s fixable, I can help you understand what is going on, and not get into the same traps but we probably can’t fix everything. Life is not a fixable disorder. The task is to understand.
The therapist interprets.
The insight is curative (this is controversial)
Some critics say – the only thing insight ever cures is curiosity.
