I just picked up Jason from school, as usual he wasn’t talking to me. We haven’t really had any sort of a relationship since his brother died, and me and his mother separated. I drove to the park in an attempt to provide some enjoyment for him. We got out of the car. “How was school, Jason?” I asked. “It was ok”, he unenthusiastically replied. He walked directly over to the bench and drooped down. I looked at his face, he had the same expression on it that has been there for the past two years, as if he was over life... and he was only 12.
“Want me to push you on the swing Jason?” I asked. “Yeah ok”, he replied. He sat on the rubber padding and I began to push, starting slow and gradually getting faster. I gave one big push and he chuckled as he was positioned horizontally in the air for a second. I gave another big push and this time he laughed. I haven’t heard Jason laugh for a very long time. “Stop pushing dad, let’s go on the see-saw!” We walked over to the see-saw and both took our positions. I kicked off the ground and Jason almost fell off his seat, he hysterically began laughing and started chanting “Higher! Higher! Higher!” After some time, I stopped and let Jason play with the other boys for a while. Watching Jason have so much fun was something I haven’t seen for a while.
It was 4:30 p.m. and time for us to leave. On our way to exit gate we bypassed a merry-go-round. Jason was starting at it and seemed keen to have a go. “Want to have a turn on the merry-go-round Jason?” I offered. “Yeah dad!” he replied in excitement. I walked over to the booth and paid for one turn. He ran over to a horse and called at me in excitement impersonating a cowboy. I couldn’t help but smile as I was enjoying the mere fact that he was happy. As he was going round and round I contracted a sudden migraine. My eyes suddenly felt heavy and it felt as though my head was being pounded vigorously onto something hard. I felt dizzy and weak...
