Willie Brandt’s speech on November 10, 1989 says it all. Germany can now start growing together as one country along with the other countries in Europe and become a unified continent again. The East Germans are used to a socialist way of life. The elder generations remember pre-war life and long to have it back. The younger generations do not even know any different. The West Germans are leading a more normal way of life, but still disapprove of this division that occurred many years ago. Now the division has crumbled and there is unity in the near future. Emotions run high as people flood the border to get out of a controlled life to freedom. The only feeling that I could feel that could be close to this emotional high and relief would be the day that I left home to live on my own. The feeling of freedom from a higher power (parents) and to be able to grow as I wanted to was a great feeling. The free people in West Germany accept the East German people with open arms as most of them have family that are now to be free from this division of states. There is mass celebration in the streets of Berlin. There are tears of joy and happiness everywhere. With two completely different lifestyles coming together, how will the country grow together? A different relationship will evolve because they are coming together in the name of freedom and they will grow together.
I think that growing together will be a good thing. So many different views and opinions can make life really enjoyable. Especially with the knowledge of having a life without freedom, people can veer away from the things that they know made life miserable under the East German policies. People will be able to buy things they could not before and give their families the things they need. Updated vehicles and renovation of housing are two really important ones that come to mind.
