Hanging Ten in Honolulu
All over the world, major cities all have something they are known for. They are things that make their city special and more desirable to visit. You can not go to London without seeing Big Ben or the Buckingham Palace, and you can not go to Paris without seeing the famous Eiffel Tower. But in Honolulu, their biggest attraction isn’t something you look at. It is something you get to experience with joy, something you get to reminisce. When most people think of Hawaii, they think of sandy beaches, vast volcanoes, or stunning sunsets. It’s not the same for all people though. When I think of Hawaii, I picture surfing. The thought of Hawaii revives my experience of surfing, and how it gave me a much deeper connection to the island than tourist attractions could. Through surfing, I was able to become closer to Hawaii, and experience it in a whole different way than the rest.
My grandparents have always loved having family traditions. Every family has their own traditions that they inherit and share with each other, but I think my grandparents tradition is the best one out there. Every time a pair of their grandkids graduate from high school, they celebrate by taking us on a beautiful cruise around Hawaii! There were only two things that I needed to do before I left Hawaii, eat some local Hawaiian food and surf off the beautiful Hawaiian coast. My cousin Breanna, my brother Cam and I were the fourth group of cousins to go on the amazing trip. By then, we had heard so many fun and interesting stories about my other cousin’s trips to Hawaii that we could barely contain our enthusiasm. There was one thing they all said we needed to do before we left, and that was surf in Honolulu.
