In the first scenario the patient compliance issues that evident are that Carolyn’s mother goes home and throws the prescriptions away. Carolyn will now have to wait at least a month to see another doctor and get another prescription. The other compliance issue is that the doctor took a phone call in the middle of the appointment with Carolyn and her mother, and did not finish the conversation, making sure that Carolyn’s mother understood everything that she had to do. The communication problems that are contributed to the patients lack of compliance is that Carolyn’s mother was in a rush and didn’t stay to make sure that all of her questions were answered. Dr. Ward could of improved his communication in a way that would promote patient compliance by not answering his phone when in the room with a patient. He could of returned the call when he was finished with Carolyn and her mother.
In scenario two the patient compliance issues that are evident in the scenario are that Eden did not follow Dr. Element’s about using the water pick that was told to her the previous visit. The other compliance issue that I think has some meaning is that the dentist didn’t want to clean Eden’s teeth because she did not use the pick. The communication problems that are contributed to Eden’s lack of compliance is that she felt like she had to buy the water pick which made her not want to use it. Dr. Element could of improved the communication in a way that would promote compliance from Eden would be that Dr. Element could of used a gentler tone, and asked if Eden had been using it and then when Eden said no, Dr. Element could of asked why.
In scenario three the patient compliance issues that are evident is that Nathan does not want to stop eating red meats because he doesn’t want to miss out on his Monday steak night, and that no one can die from having high cholesterol.
