WHAT IS A CASTLE?
A castle is a residence were royal families and there armies are stationed. A castle is a very well protected and virtually indestructible. Castles are very high in class and Kings and queens ruled them.
LOCATION OF A CASTLE
Castles were usually built on top of a hill, it was a advantage because the lookout guards could more easily spot attackers approaching.
HISTORY OF CASTLES
The first castle was about around 1600 B.C. The walls of the castles gave a huge advantage of attackers. With its high and very thick Walls and it provided very good protection and was very difficult to take over. Any attacker against a castle was almost guaranteed to lose. From the first castle, they would be around for thousands of years after.
THE MOAT
A moat was built around many of the castles. This was a deep trench surrounding the castle walls, filled with water. A bridge was built to cross the moat. The bridge was raised during an attack. The moat was loaded with traps and sharp spikes in case someone tried to swim across.
INSIDE A CASTLE AND INHABITANTS
The number of rooms in a castle varied. Smaller castles which were only used as military headquarters which had about only 20 rooms. And only kings and queens live there.
Larger castles were completely different. Castles built after the seventh century were very big and thousands of people could live there at one time.
Castle great hall
The largest room inside a castle is the Great Hall. In the Great Hall, many fabulous events took place, such as banquets and festivals. Some punishments also occurred in this room. But most sentences took place in the dungeon of the castle. Only the most serious people were punished in front of a crowd.
KEEP
