Before beginning any activity I always make a point to greet the child that I am going to work with. I said good afternoon to TC and he said hello back. I asked him how he was today, smiling at him and he responded that he was okay. I asked if he was ready to show me how brilliant he was at making words and his excited manner showed me that he was happy to be doing this. I said that I really wanted him to try his hardest today as he had shown me before how clever he could be. I was aware that he had had toilet training issues in the past so I specifically asked him if he had had a toilet accident. Because I have a very good relationship with him he was happy to tell me that he had had a poo in his pants and that his bottom was sore. I asked him if it was okay for me to take him to clean him up so that he felt more comfortable and he was happy for me to do that. I told TC that we would go to the toilet and sort him out so he was more comfortable. On the way I gathered clean clothes, bags for the dirty clothes, gloves and wipes. This was an afternoon session and when cleaning TC it was obvious that it had happened some time ago, probably during lunchtime, and he hadn’t told anyone. He was quite upset because his bottom was sore and I stressed to him that if this happened again he must tell someone straight away so they can sort him out and stop this from happening. I was however grateful that he trusted me enough and that we had a good enough...
