In the recent half century (after WWII) the west dominant world has disappeared as East Asian nations start to rise in power economically and militaristically. It has always been either Europe or America being the main super power in the world, but after the Asian states started to adapt to their technology the super power has been balanced among the western and eastern side of the world. It all started with Japan as the leading nation and following Japan the four tiger nations started to grow, and eventually the surrounding nations began to develop at such a rapid pace to become on equal ground with Japan. A city state that is currently seen as a world level economy is Hong Kong which is currently under China’s sovereignty. Hong Kong is worldly renown with a strong economy and also as a cosmopolitan city. It started getting famous when Britain wanted to trade with Chinese tea and other goods. They utilized Hong Kong as their main port, but eventually after forced trade and colonization in China, Hong Kong became Britain territory in 1898. After British colonialism it became under Japanese rule during WWII (1941-1945). After Japan’s defeat instead of going back to China, Britain regained control over HK for their own beneficial reasons and gradually there were less communication going on between HK and the mainland due to the civil disputes. After 1949 when China officially became PRC, HK and mainland communication was cutoff even deeper than ever. HK and China seemed connected, but at the same time separated, and eventually that again slowly changed in the recent decades where there is more interaction. Originally, Hong Kong was used as a big port for China and even now serves as one of the main port for China. Of course it didn’t naturally become a strong city-state on its own, but partly was able to grow strong through strong relative location and the openness to the outside world.
