“Difference in Classroom Environments College versus High School”
Henderson State University offers higher education which is much different than high school classroom instruction. After going to high school for four years, college is definitely a step up. The classes and campus are bigger as well as the campus, class times vary more, homework takes more time, and the teacher/student communication is a complete change from high school. In high school, classes are usually no more than twenty students; however, in college, most classes have approximately thirty-five students. Students go into their classes, find a seat in the lecture hall, and fade into another face among the silent crowd. With as many as thirty-five or more students in a class, college professors do not personally get to know their students and most professors would not even notice if a student was in attendance that day or not. Compared to high school, college is a huge stepping stone. In high school, teachers get to know their students on a first and last name basis within the first few weeks of classes. Most high school teachers know each student’s personality, study habits, strengths, weaknesses, and grades by the end of each year. In college, students are fortunate if his or her professor recognizes their faces or even their name; however, at Henderson State University, many of the professors and instructors have average class sizes usually around thirty students; which allows professors to get to know each student a bit better than other colleges. Almost all college professors, at Henderson maintain office hours to help their students with the assigned course assignments and students are encouraged to seek assistance not only from their professors, but also through the First Year Experience student tutoring services.
