Lab 2 – Water Quality and Contamination
Experiment 1: Effects of Groundwater Contamination
Table 1: Water Observations (Smell, Color, Etc.) |
Beaker | Observations |
1 | Just plain tap water. The tap water is from well and not city water. No apparent sediments and no peculiar smell. |
2 | There is no difference in the smell of the water. The vegetable oil settles at the top of the water. |
3 | The smell of the water is taken over by the smell of the vinegar. No difference in the look of the water. |
4 | No difference in the smell of the water. The laundry detergent settled to the top of the water. This is apparent by the bubbles. |
5 | The water turned brown with sediment at the bottom of the beaker. The water filtered quicly through the tunnel |
6 | The water smells like dirt. The water turned brown with sediment at the bottom of beaker. The vegetable oil no longer settles to the top of water. Or it could be that I cannot see the vegetable oil. The sediment seems heavier then in the other beakers. |
7 | The water smells like vinegar. The water turned darker brown with sediment at the bottom of the beaker. The water filtered though just a quickly as the oil. |
8 | The smell of dirt is not as strong, however the water turned darker then the other beakers. The sediment went to the bottom of the beaker quicker then the other beakers. |
POST LAB QUESTIONS
1. Develop hypotheses on the ability of oil, vinegar, and laundry detergent to contaminate groundwater.
a. Oil hypothesis = Oil will contaminate or the change the amount water filtered
b. Vinegar hypothesis = Vinegar will contaminate through the soil allowing the water to filter through
c. Laundry detergent hypothesis = Laundry detergent will contaminate the soil by allowing the water to pass through
2. Based on the results of your experiment, would you reject or accept each hypothesis that you produced in question 1? Explain how you determined...
