Pursuant to sections 94 and 95 of the Lawyers and Conveyancers Act 2006, the New
Zealand Law Society, with the approval of the Minister of Justice and after consultation in accordance with section 100 of that Act, makes the following rules.

These rules are the Lawyers and Conveyancers Act (Lawyers: Conduct and
Client Care) Rules 2008.

Commencement
These rules come into force on 1 August 2008.

Rules of conduct and client care for lawyers
Every lawyer must comply with the rules of conduct and client care for lawyers
set out in the Schedule.

Changes authorised by subpart 2 of Part 2 of the Legislation Act 2012 have been made in this official reprint.
Note 4 at the end of this reprint provides a list of the amendments incorporated.

Client care and service information
Whatever legal services your lawyer is providing, he or she must—


act competently, in a timely way, and in accordance with instructions received
and arrangements made:



protect and promote your interests and act for you free from compromising influences or loyalties:



discuss with you your objectives and how they should best be achieved:



provide you with information about the work to be done, who will do it and the
way the services will be provided:



charge you a fee that is fair and reasonable and let you know how and when
you will be billed:



give you clear information and...
