Introduction
Leadership is a process that toward many steps to accomplishing the final goals. A successful leader has to have a clear thought and an open mind with a good foresight, so they can easily forecast two or three steps before it happens. They know how to define their goal, mission and vision right from the beginning, and use the right way to lead everybody. They are considered as the ones who stand at the front of the boat, and the first one to take every responsibility for the whole process. Leader, that means they are stubborn and determined, and have knowledge and skills to cover the jobs and ready to fight for the worthy things. Good leaders are made, not born, says Colin Powell (2005). When focusing on the cross-cultural, culture has a big role in the difference between the West and the East, includes the globalisation. Cross-cultural studies indicate the differences and similarities between the nature and effect of transformational leadership across cultures.
This paper will discuss on Cross-Cultural leadership styles across culture, and focus on the different issues between leadership in Vietnam, Nigeria and Germany, therefore see how the manager might need to change the style to adapt and improve leadership skill. The first part is a literature review analysing the leadership styles between Lewin (1939) and Yuki (1994) across cultures, and point out the key differences. Then I am going to talk about the challenges the leaders must face nowadays refer to the globalisation, considered the world is flat and extend big and bigger, and classify the solutions for sustainable development. The third part will compare about the leadership styles in Vietnam, British and Nigeria.
